It improves based on weapon type and 1 handed spear is a polearm as polearm is 1 or 2 handed. It's same for thrown javelins in melee, they count as polearms too. Exceptions are armies with lots of pikes, there you wold want to have long couching lance, since AI is terrible at timing of thrusts so you can couch-harass them.Tournaments with more named characters in them will give better rewards. That said I’ve never seen a glaive in a tournament reward. Best bet is to just sell the fancy horses from the tournaments and buy a glaive with that money. The khuzait towns usually have them available and they really aren’t that expensive.

For melee on horseback, you want either a couchable lance or swing polearm like a glaive. Swinging is much better for overall damage output but some people just like the satisfaction of hitting with a couched lance. Custom weapons with specific parts will let you do both. 2H weapons can work on horseback but you need them to be very long.

What I like about the Long Glaive: Good damage and range to be able to "harass" in close combat the ennemy cavalry without risking to die.
