Hose pressure is forcing water up through the engine, not the water pump. Like wrenchin said,you got a better motor than that 90 mariner.88s were 90hp motors with the option of t-n-t and vro.Same identical motor as the 90hp,omc must have tried to sell these as a very inexspeniseve motor with no options.My business partner uncrated them when new,and when they changed from the 88, to 112s same thing.From than on they were called SPL and made till bombardier bought them.I am looking at buying a boat that has an Evinrude 88HP SPL (late 80's) on it and was wandering if anyone knows anything about these motors. The only optional pistons are the .030 oversize, which don't add many cubic inches. Even with doing these, you may not be happy with the outcome.

Make sure the bolts are run up close to being tight, but loose enough to let the driveshaft move around a bit.
