The Frans Hals Museum is Haarlem’s museum of fine art, with the world’s biggest collection of Frans Hals paintings. Come and enjoy Haarlem’s 16th- and 17th-century, modern and contemporary art in two beautiful historical buildings in the old city centre. Frans Hals was born in either 1582 or 1583 in Antwerp to Franchois Fransz Hals van Mechelen, a cloth merchant, and Adraentje von Geertenryck. Antwerp was at that time part of the Spanish Netherlands and during the Fall of Antwerp a couple of years later (1584-1585) Hals' family fled to Haarlem in the Dutch Republic. In the middle of Frans Hals Museum Hof stands an eighteenth-century doll’s house once owned by Sara Ploos van Amstel-Rothé. She was a rich woman, well able to afford this expensive hobby. Because her doll’s house was not a toy, it was like a miniature museum to show off to friends, acquaintances, and visitors.The Frans Hals Museum houses Haarlem’s largest collection of Golden Age paintings, with a particular focus on its namesake’s oeuvre.
