I have a Marlin Model 39 or 39A with a serial number of 427168. I believe it is a Model 39A first model, except I can find nothing to validate the serial number and also, in all the pictures I have looked at, checking on the forend and butt stock grip. The last patent date on the barrel is March 1, 1892.In 1922 it was again renamed to the model 39 then finally the last change in 1939 to the model 39A, which finally stuck to this day. When first made it had a straight stock in American Walnut. Of course this rifle and all Marlin lever rifles had the highest quality American Walnut stocks. I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.

Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel.
